Indie Go Go Power Rangers!

In the wake of Power/Rangers, Michael Copon has launched an Indiegogo campaign for what is alternately called The Independent Power Rangers Movie and The Independent Movie (with Power Rangers in It). Check out the video!

The campaign features such Power Rangers legends as David Yost, Walter Jones, and Austin St. John of Mighty Morphin’, Jason Faunt and Erin Cahill of Copon’s own Time Force, and even Azim Rizk of Megaforce, among others. The video opens with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the disclaimer added to Power/Rangers after it was taken down from and subsequently re-added to Youtube and Vimeo and then starts on a scene in which Copon as Lucas arrives in the present day to inform Wes that everyone in the future is dead. It then cuts to Copon asking for the money for the campaign, cutting to short videos with other actors asking for funding, and then back to Copon explaining what he wants the movie to be (The Expendables meets Pacific Rim meets Total Recall/Looper) with Power Ranger-esque characters.

Here’s how the Indiegogo page describes the plot:

You see, this movie will be the film Ranger fans have wanted to see, just not in the universe of Power Rangers. Instead, the film will revolve around the Police officer Lucas from the future who will be going back in time to convince Wes to join forces with him on this mission to save the world. Forces have destroyed everything in the future and now its up to this new team of Super Hero’s [sic] to set things right in the future! Teaming up with the top scientist and engineers of 2016, these super heros [sic] are equipped with advance machinery and the ability to enhance their DNA which makes them super human.

So while it seems that he’s using Saban’s characters portrayed by the same actors, he’s sidestepping legal issues with a “hey, they just have the same names or whatever.” The campaign is seeking $200,000 for funding and if it doesn’t reach its goal, Copon states that “your contributions will help fund other projects at Michael Copon Studios.”
