Entertainment Weekly, who brought us the first official image of Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa a few weeks ago, has brought us the first official image of the ranger suits from the upcoming Power Rangers film. “The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis,” said director Dean Israelite. “These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.” They are described as “translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies” by Entertainment Weekly, as opposed to the spandex/lycra that has been traditional for the TV iterations of the Power Rangers.
“It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume,” production designer Andrew Menzies said. “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.” Becky G (Trini) was quite excited though, saying “It’s the coolest costume ever; I’m gonna wear it for Halloween for, like, five years.”
The Power Rangers film is due to hit theaters on January 13, 2017. Dean Israelite serves as the film’s director, with Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz serving as writers, and Saban Brands’ Haim Saban and Brian Casentini, and Lionsgate’s Alison Shearmur serve as executive producers. The film stars Becky G (Trini/Yellow Ranger), RJ Cyler (Billy/Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott (Kimberly/Pink Ranger), Dacre Montgomery(Jason/Red Ranger), and Ludi Lin (Zack/Black Ranger).
