Episode #0041 - Linkara’s History of Super Sentai

Download the MP3

This time, we are joined once again by Lewis Lovhaug! We talk about every single Ranger suit from Akaranger to KyouryuGold (but unfortunately not KyouryuCyan, which was announced just after the episode was recorded.) We cover a small bit of news and a tiny bit of feedback, but seriously. We talk about suits with Linkara. Do you really need anything else? Be sure to check it out!

Found a pic of Sun Vulcan. The belt buckles are just the symbols of their respective animal.

Oh, thanks! We probably should have had a better shot in back up, but you work with what you have.

Hey, guys, awesome cast! Love hearing discussion on the suits. Just wanted to point out if you weren’t informed after recording that Dynaman was originally gonna be baseball-themed, which explains the suits. Also, Liveman had the first female Blue, but it used the traditional hue reserved for males.

This was more an issue of pace, we were so rushed we were lucky we remembered what we did. I do remember the Baseball theme now that you mention it. We actually mentioned it on an earlier episode, but forgot. Also, good point on Liveman, thanks!

Just so you know, Jetman wasn’t the first team with a female blue. Liveman was.

I think what Colton and Naaim meant was that Blue Swallow was the first female to have a cyan suit, rather than the darker blue usually seen. You are, however, completely correct in that Liveman’s Blue Ranger was the first female blue warrior in Super Sentai.

I just noticed something about the costumes of Kyoryuger, in particular the single shoulder pad. The shoulder is coloured red on all the Rangers, not just the Red Ranger. Also it’s positioned at the top end of the sash. Meaning if you look hard enough, the combo of the shoulder pad and teeth-pattern sash looks like the head of T-Rex on their chests. 🙂

Something I only thought about now that I listened to this: The Boukenger/Operation Overdrive suits have a compass on them. I don’t know if this is Slowpoke of me but it just came to me.

That kind of makes sense with the Boukenger adventure theme (hell from what I understand the Japanese word for adventure IS “bouken”). And it also kind of works with Operation Overdrive given the basic “story.” Plus the compass looks kind of like an “O” which might be the go-to explanation for the name “Operation Overdrive” as opposed to the original name that IMO would have worked better “Power Rangers Relic Hunters.”

I never understood why they didn’t just have like, a regular, flat visor for Shinkenger, and then have a small plate on the top of the helmet with the kanji on it. That might have worked better, jmo.
