The anticipated Mighty Morphin Power Rangers film now has a release date: July 22, 2016. The film is a collaboration between Lionsgate Pictures and Saban Brands, and features producer and writer Roberto Orci as well as X-Men: First Class writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller. These three writers interestingly all have experience with 2010s theatrical reboots of existing franchises, including the X-Men, Star Trek, and Spider-Man. Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, and Allison Shearmur will serve as producers.
This upcoming feature film intends to reboot the Power Rangers franchise for a 2010s theatrical audience, centering around the Mighty Morphin incarnation of the franchise.
Edit: Roberto Orci confirmed in an interview with IGN that his creative team is working very carefully with the Saban Group to ensure this film fits within the universe at large. Orci states “It’s got a continuity within the world. I can’t tell you what, but it does have a continuity.” The creative team is open to the idea of appearances by past Power Rangers, and is working with Saban to ensure such a cameo fits within this world.
