Power Rangers Dino Charge will begin filming in Auckland, New Zealand later this year. While it was previously reported that the show would simply film ‘abroad,’ we now have full confirmation that not only will New Zealand be the filming location for ten consecutive seasons of Power Rangers, but also the home country of one of the Dino Charge Rangers (James Davies, the Black Dino Charge Ranger, is a Kiwi. A New Zealand national, not a small flightless fruit.). It is important to note that in Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger, the team was not exclusively comprised of Japanese nationals: Amy Yuuzuki (KyoryuPink) was a Japanese-American student studying in Japan, and Ian Yorkland was an archaeologist who worked in the United Kingdom prior to becoming a Kyoryuger. Past seasons of Power Rangers have also had foreign Rangers, notably Xander, the green ranger from Power Rangers Mystic Force.
Film New Zealand’s Gisella Carr says the following about the show:
Power Rangers is an iconic brand enjoyed by millions of fans around the world, and has a long history of working in New Zealand. This is a fantastic opportunity to tell that story and include New Zealand within it.
We are delighted to be working with Saban Brands and the Power Rangers, and agencies such as Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development (ATEED) to promote New Zealand’s involvement, particularly New Zealand cast and crew, and messages about our screen industry’s capacity and capability for television production.
The New Zealand Film Commission’s Dave Gibson also had comments regarding the Power Rangers franchise’s role in developing Kiwi talent:
The new season is particularly important as it is the first time that the production will formally engage directing and writing interns to work alongside the experienced team.
Having up-and-coming New Zealand talent actively participating in the creative process is something we value highly and forms part of a long-term strategy to develop New Zealand expertise, with an eye to future development of New Zealand IP.
Power Rangers Dino Charge will bring with it significant benefits to the Kiwi economy and is eligible for the New Zealand Screen Production Grant. The show is being executive produced by Haim Saban and Judd Lynn, and produced by Brian Casentini and New Zealand national Sally Campbell.
