Elizabeth Banks has been cast as Rita Repulsa in the upcoming Power Rangers feature film. Banks is well-known for her past work in film and television; notable feature film roles include Effie Trinket in Lionsgate’s Hunger Games franchise, Wyldstyle in LEGO Movie, and Gail in the Pitch Perfect series. She was also a regular guest on Scrubs as Dr. Kim Briggs and 30 Rock as Avery Jessup. In addition to her work in front of the camera, Banks performed directorial duties on Pitch Perfect 2 and is also slated to direct the series’ third installment.
She joins Becky G (Trini/Yellow Ranger), RJ Cyler (Billy/Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott (Kimberly/Pink Ranger), Dacre Montgomery (Jason/Red Ranger), and Ludi Lin (Zach/Black Ranger) in the coming film. Becky G is a recording artist who has contributed to several feature film soundtracks in the past. Cyler has previously appeared in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Lin has appeared in the Netflix series Marco Polo, while Scott has recently appeared in the box office hit The Martian and the television series Terra Nova (alongside Power Rangers RPM‘s Eka Darville), while Montgomery is known for his appearance in the Australian short film “BETRAND THE TERRIBLE.”
The Power Rangers film is due to hit theaters on January 13, 2017. Dean Israelite serves as the film’s director, with Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz serving as writers, and Saban Brands’ Haim Saban and Brian Casentini, and Lionsgate’s Alison Shearmur serve as executive producers.
