Lionsgate has released the first image of the upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie in Entertainment Weekly:
Taken by Kimberly French, the image depicts the five Power Rangers in civilian clothing. According to the film’s director, Dean Israelite, the story will reflect the lives of teenagers today and will feature the rangers as “disenfranchised and disparate” teenagers who are not initally friends. He further describes the Rangers’ suits as “really modern, edgy, badass, aspirational quality.”
The film stars Becky G (Trini/Yellow Ranger), RJ Cyler (Billy/Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott (Kimberly/Pink Ranger), Dacre Montgomery (Jason/Red Ranger), and Ludi Lin (Zach/Black Ranger) in the coming film. Becky G is a recording artist who has contributed to several feature film soundtracks in the past. Cyler has previously appeared in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Lin has appeared in the Netflix series Marco Polo, while Scott has recently appeared in the box office hit The Martian and the television series Terra Nova (alongside Power Rangers RPM‘s Eka Darville), while Montgomery is known for his appearance in the Australian short film “BETRAND THE TERRIBLE.” The film is also set to feature Elizabeth Banks (Rita Repulsa), whose filmography is too extensive to list here.
The Power Rangers film is due to hit theaters on January 13, 2017. Dean Israelite serves as the film’s director, with Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz serving as writers, and Saban Brands’ Haim Saban and Brian Casentini, and Lionsgate’s Alison Shearmur serve as executive producers.
